Volunteer in the Cha May Ching Museum Boutique

Cha May Ching Museum Boutique volunteers work side-by-side with staff and other volunteers to create a great retail experience by providing excellent customer service.

In the museum boutique, we pride ourselves on creating an engaging, friendly atmosphere and sharing a passion for Asian art and culture through unique merchandise. Volunteering in the museum boutique is a lot of fun as you get to interact with visitors from around the world, learn and share about the museum, explore new merchandise, and contribute to the financial support of the museum’s exhibitions and programs.

Expectations

• An interest in and willingness to learn about museum boutique merchandise and share your knowledge with visitors
• Dependability, reliability, and punctuality for volunteer assignments
• A neat appearance consistent with representing the museum and the museum boutique to visitors
• A willingness to cooperate with staff and other volunteers and accept supervision and evaluation of your volunteer work
• Mandatory wearing of a face mask while volunteering (if still mandated by San Francisco’s Department of Public Health)
• Because we serve a diverse audience, multilingual skills are a plus (not a requirement)

Training and Time Commitment

• Mandatory orientation session/interview, including mandatory training on COVID-19 safety protocols, before you can be scheduled to start volunteering. The mandatory orientation session/interview will be scheduled when your volunteer application is accepted for consideration
• On-the-job training with a museum boutique staff member and/or a mentor volunteer
• Ongoing briefings about new merchandise, merchandise specials, and changes in the museum boutique each time you come to volunteer
• A commitment of 96 volunteer hours annually is required for at least one year, preferably two four-hour shifts each month
• There are two museum boutique shifts every day the museum is open:
  • Thursdays, 12:45—4:45 PM and 4:15—8:15 PM (museum hours are 1–8 PM)
  • Fridays through Mondays, 11 AM—3 PM and 1:30—5:30 PM (museum hours are 10 AM–5 PM)
  • The museum is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays

What more should you know about volunteering in the boutique?

• Museum boutique volunteers are scheduled by the volunteer programs team and report to the boutique staff
• This is a great opportunity to learn about Asian art and culture and to meet new people
• Boutique volunteers work alongside a variety of people, both staff and volunteer, from throughout the Bay Area
• With the ebb and flow of visitors, there are quiet times during which you’ll be asked to help with restocking and tidying
• The opportunity, if requested by staff, to learn the cash register
