Policies

The Asian Art Museum’s policies are designed to ensure the safety and comfort of all guests, as well as to protect the artworks in our care.

Safety & Security

Visitation policies at the Asian Art Museum are designed to protect visitors and staff as well as secure and preserve the collections, facility and historic building entrusted in our care. Violation of these guidelines could result in removal from the museum.

While on Asian Art Museum premises NO VISITOR SHALL:

  • Carry firearms, other dangerous or deadly weapons, such as firearms or pepper spray, or explosives, either openly or concealed on the premises. The prohibition on firearms applies to all visitors, including those with firearm permits, but not to active law enforcement personnel authorized to carry firearms.
  • Carry sharp objects such as knives (including pocket knives), scissors, screwdrivers, etc. 
  • Display or carry placards, signs or banners
  • Destroy, damage or remove property
  • Use loud, abusive or other inappropriate language
  • Create any hazard to persons or things
  • Engage in disorderly or obscene acts
  • Take photographs for advertising or other commercial purpose
  • Solicit for commercial or charitable purposes or distribute advertisements, pamphlets or flyers

Please observe the following rules during your visit to the museum:

  • Silence cell phones
  • Help us protect the art – look, but do not touch
  • Do no smoke or vape anywhere in the building
  • Please no food or drinks in the galleries
  • Shoes and shirts are required

Animals

Trained guide and service animals are welcome at the Asian Art Museum. Animals must be under the control of the owner at all times (e.g. leash, carrier).

Infant Feeding

Infant feeding is allowed in all public spaces. Bottles must be in the control of an adult.

Photography

  • Photography in the collection galleries is permitted for personal, noncommercial use and with a handheld camera. The use of flashes or tripods is prohibited.
  • Photography is not allowed in some special exhibitions.
  • You cannot sell, reproduce or distribute any photographs you take in the museum without written permission from the Asian Art Museum.

  • Please be aware that you may be photographed or filmed by museum staff during your visit and that we may use these image in online or printed museum materials. 

Sketching

Pencil sketching is permitted in the collection galleries (second and third floors). Sketching may be prohibited in special exhibitions, which feature works on loan to the museum. Please check with museum staff.

Strollers

Strollers are allowed in all public spaces. However, please note that our security officers may require checking or parking strollers to facilitate physical distancing.

Tours

To support our community’s physical distancing efforts, docent-led tours are temporarily suspended. To enjoy a self-guided tour, please download our free mobile guide app. Commercial tours led by members of the public are not permitted. Any group touring the museum may not include a lecture or talk unless prior arrangement has been made with the museum.
