Volunteer in Learning and Engagement

Support the museum’s learning experiences and vibrant public programs by volunteering with our Learning and Civic Engagement Division! No previous experience is required. Our volunteers come from all Bay Area communities and backgrounds, from high-schoolers to retirees. All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older.

What are some examples of L&CE Division volunteer duties?

• Welcoming thousands of students into the galleries
• Facilitating hands-on kids’ art programming during Sundays at the Asian Art Museum
• Teaching mahjong, Chinese brush painting, zine making, and other arts
• Prepping our art carts, setting up for our storytellers and docents
• Translating for our global visitors
• Ensuring our performers, lecturers, and chefs are equipped to delight audiences

What is the time commitment for volunteers?

• We expect Learning and Civic Engagement volunteers to volunteer for at least one year with a minimum of 96 hours annually. This generally consists of two four-hour shifts each month. A mandatory onboarding session is required prior to your first shift.

When can I volunteer?

We have opportunities throughout the week:

• School tour support shifts on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
• Learning-focused public programs and art practice learning on Thursday afternoons and evenings
• “Sundays at the Asian Art Museum” shifts all day between 9 AM to 6 PM

What are you looking for in a volunteer?

• Have a friendly, inclusive attitude with strong cross-cultural skills
• Be reliable and punctual for volunteer assignments
• Show willingness to learn and work cooperatively with museum staff and other volunteers

When should I apply to volunteer?

• Volunteer applications are accepted any time. We will keep your application on file for up to six months.
